From the dust jacket:

KOLU HAD TWO secret wishes. She wanted a baby sister and she wanted to buy that baby sister a little pink dress, When Kolu's mother went into the forest with Grandmother to await the birth of a new baby, Kolu nearly burst with eagerness. Would her first wish come true? Happily, it did. But then how was Kolu to buy the pink dress? She had no money.

Mrs. Chandler tells how Kolu worked out a plan, although a rogue (the Liberian term for thief) nearly spoiled everything.

This story of a girl in modern Liberia is based on the author's opportunity to live and work among Liberians. It is a realistic story, told in the rhythm of the English spoken there. It shows the respect children feel for older people, and it demonstrates the love that holds families together. There is also a suggestion of the African's desire to keep his own ways and still choose what he needs from Western culture.

Like Mrs. Chandler's first African story, Will You Carry Me?, this book is easy to read. The pictures by Betty Stull are done from a firsthand knowledge of Liberia. This is the kind of book that builds understanding of childhood in other lands.
