Florida Saga 2007

April 15, 2007 - May 01, 2007

Our trip to Florida was quite an adventure.  On April 15th we flew to Miami and over the next two weeks we traveled from Key West to New Orleans.  We saw old houses, alligators, swamps, and palm trees.  We went swimming in pools and the Gulf.  We saw old friends and cousins, historical sights, and ate at yummy restaurants.  Here are the pictures we brought back; they capture where we went, but nothing can compare to being there.

Chapter One: The Trip Down
April 15 - April 16
In which I relate the Red-Eye Flight (which had only one minor incident), the Baggage Claim (it took a while), a trip to a Wal-mart in Miami (Spanish anyone?), and the drive to Key West.
Chapter Two: Key West
April 16 - April 18
In which we have a good time forming a negative opinion.
Chapter Three: A Day in the Everglades
April 19
In which the wildlife is smarter than the tourists and we see some alligators (not for the faint of heart).
Chapter Four: A Stop in Cape Coral
April 19
In which we see my one-time home.
Chapter Five: Venice
April 19 - April 20
In which we are happy that the complimentary breakfast at our hotel includes protein, we meet up with old friends, and swim in the ocean without going numb.
Chapter Six: St. Augustine
April 21 - April 23
In which we enjoy ourselves immensely, despite some very painful sunburns.
Chapter Seven: A Visit with Cousins
April 24 - April 29
In which we are happy to be in a home with dishes, projects, games, movies, and good friends.
Chapter Eight: New Orleans
April 30 - May 1
In which we are forced to change our plans when the riverboat wasn't running and see some southern mansions instead.

After spending a day in New Orleans, we went back to our hotel, happy to be packing up for the last time.

We got up at four the next morning and took an airport taxi across the street to the airport. Without any complications we checked our bags and were in the air on the way home.

According to our tickets we had more than an hour to spend at our connection in Georgia. After grabbing some food we found our gate but the plane arriving there was going to New York. That's when we first realized that something was wrong. The helpful people at the Delta ticket counter informed us that the morning flight to Portland had taken off two minutes before we landed and there wouldn't be another until seven that night. They generously gave us new tickets and seven dollars each to spend on food for the whole day.

The prospect of spending eleven hours sitting in the Atlanta airport was not very exciting. I just kept thinking about how we were supposed to have gotten home in the early afternoon and now we wouldn't arrive until after bedtime. We divided our time between wandering around, reading Perelandra, by C. S. Lewis, and buying food to eat. Eventually we rented a movie to watch on my laptop, but the loudspeaker kept playing messages reminding people not to leave their baggage unattended, making hearing the dialogue hard. Needless to say, we did not buy any "I Love Atlanta" paraphernalia.

Joshua did really well taking naps in the bundler and playing happily. I was glad that he had learned how to walk so that he wasn't wanting to crawl on the dirty floor.
