F. W. Walbank

This award-winning scholar who wrote with distinction and clarity was born on December 10, 1909, in Bingley, Yorkshire, England.  He studied the Classics at Peterhouse, Cambridge, winning numerous prizes for his outstanding scholarship abilities.  Gaining pleasure from helping his students, Walbank taught ancient history and classical archaeology at the University of Liverpool for over 25 years.  A modest man, Walbank was known for his study of Hellenistic history and his expertise of Polybus, a Greek historian and politician.  His research and work culminated in three volumes called Historical Commentary of Polybus, which took him 35 years to complete.  Also an author of papers and articles, Walbank finished his final article only a little over a year before he passed away on October 23, 2008 at age 98.
