Eva K. Betz was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, and attended Catholic schools. She began her career as a teacher in public schools in her home state and in Rhode Island. She has reviewed books for Catholic and secular publications and on lecture tours. She also had a radio program of book reviews, as well as one on which original children's stories were told. During World War II she served as a volunteer, driving staff cars, trucks and buses.
The author of more than twenty books for young people, Mrs. Betz is well known for her historical fiction, particularly for a series of four novels, with a New Jersey setting, about the American Revolution from 1774 to 1781. These are titled Young Eagles, Freedom Drums, Desperate Drums and Victory Drums (St. Anthony Guild Press, 1952, 1953, 1951, 1955). She wrote David and Michael (Sheed & Ward) for her two grandsons by the same names, who are, she says, her most faithful and enthusiastic readers.
Mrs. Betz and her husband Joseph live in Passaic, New Jersey, where she is active in civic and church organizations. She was the first Girl Scout Commissioner in the Passaic area, and is presently in charge of sales promotion for the St. Anthony Guild Press.
The author is an honorary life member of the New Jersey Historical Society and a member of the Mark Twain Association.
