Until the third quarter of the eighteenth century, children were dressed in miniature versions of the clothes their parents wore, with a complete disregard for suitability or comfort. But by 1800 they were wearing light, undemanding clothes most charmingly illustrated by Kate Greenaway in her drawings until fashion constricted them again with crinolines, frills and heavily decorated hats. At the beginning of this century a more realistic and freer style returned.
