Elfrida Vipont

Born in Manchester, England, in 1902, Vipont went on in life to study history and music.  A professional singer, author, and lecturer, Vipont excelled in her chosen pursuits.  She married R.P. Foulds and sometimes wrote using her married name, E.V. Foulds.  In other instances, such as for Blow the Man Down, she used the pen name Charles Vipont.  Nevertheless, this author of nearly 24 children's novels is perhaps best remembered for her books The Lark in the Morn and The Lark on the Wing.  This latter work won her a Carnegie Medal.  Both books displayed Vipont's interest in Quakerism as they follow a Quaker girl through life as she develops into a talented singer.  Copies of her letters, articles, unpublished works, books, and dictation tapes are shown as a display in the John Rylands University Library in Manchester.  Vipont passed away in 1992.
