The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

With the murder of Julius Cæsar, unhappy days fall upon ancient Rome. It is a time of brother against brother, friend against friend. Young Lucius—son of a freedman and now a member of the household of Lord Marcus Junius Brutus—finds himself deeply involved in the turmoil, although his greatest wish is to live a peaceful life and write poetry.

After Cæsar's funeral, riots break out, madness and terror reign in Rome, and Lord Brutus decides to leave Italy and prepare an army to fight for the Republic. The faithful Lucius accompanies him to Macedonia, and shares the terrible hardships, quarrels, and recriminations that precede the Battle of Philippi. It is Lucius's friend Pylades, the Greek slave, who first predicts disaster as two eagles, symbols of victory, suddenly abandon their ship. But even Pylades could not have foreseen the tragedy, betrayal, and bloodshed yet to come.

Another masterful piece of historical writing for teen-age readers, by the author of the highly suc successful Jacobin's Daughter. Like the first book, this is told as fiction, although based on extensive research. Most of the characters are taken from history, but the author found young Lucius as a minor figure in Shakespeare's Julius Cæsar and breathed life into him so that he might become the hero of this gripping story. Handsome chapter decorations in black-and-white line add drama and authentic atmosphere.
