The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

This is the thrilling tale—so real it almost seems true—of a wonderful black bear who lives high in the Rocky Mountains. Duff, a likeable bear, whose coat is actually more brown than black, is a yearling when the story opens. He is often led into danger because he has all the daring and curiosity of the young. Warmly and humorously, Duff's growth from cubhood, his meetings with man, his contacts and contests with other animals, and his need to fight for his very life are vividly described. There are exciting fights with the stubborn old leader of the bears. Before Duff emerges the largest and strongest of the black bears, he has a terrific tangle with a huge, tough grizzly.

Good authentic stories of wild life are always fascinating and useful. This one ends happily for Duff rather than the hunter. The contrast between two men, Webb who thought only of the kill, and Danny who wanted fair play for the bear, is well drawn. The description of the country and the details of bear life and character add much to the interest of this story.

Mr. Rush is well known for his books on wild-animal life in the Rockies. His stories for boys and girls are Duff, Lumberman's Dog, Red Fox of the Kinapoo, Rocky Mountain Ranger, Wild Horses of Rainrock, and Yellowstone Scout.
