Flowers hold a universal appeal for people all over the world. We use them to speak for us, giving flowers to express emotion, love, friendship, and sympathy. We are fascinated by their colors, but underneath the enchanting rainbow of hues is an incredible beauty of form, structure, and value That beauty can be captured by the simplest of tools the drawing pencil.
With the delicate touch of a pencil, we can capture the gentle fold of a bell flower or the intricate detail of an opening bud We can develop the deep shadows of a twisted leaf or the dark center of a sunflower to make our drawings come to life
It is with great pleasure that I invite you to look over my shoulder to see how I meet the challenge of portraying the splendor of the world of flowers and botanicals The foundation of all drawing is observation. The lessons in this book are designed to help you simplify what you are seeing, first by using basic lines and angles, then progressing to depiction of the organic shapes, and finally adding the tonal shading to develop the forms. Throughout these pages, I share skills that I have learned from other artists, as well as some techniques that I have developed through my own experimentation. I encourage you to experiment on your own and approach the exercises with a joyful heart
