DK Readers

In the footsteps of DK's eyewitness books come these early readers. They're mostly science focused with some history, and use large type and full color photographs. The earlier series uses repetition to drive home words and includes a picture dictionary at the end for larger words. Later readers include info boxes, indexes, and glossaries.

Like the other DK books, the facts are stated plainly and without sugarcoating, so if your kid really wants to know exactly how a cobra kills, eats, and digests a live rat, they're in luck. These books are perfect for young readers who are into history, knowledge, and "real stuff," and aren't especially squeamish.

There are 5 levels of readers to keep an eye out for:

  • Pre-Level 1: Learning to Read
  • Level 1: Beginning to Read
  • Level 2: Beginning to Read Alone
  • Level 3: Reading Alone
  • Level 4: Proficient Readers

Review by Lauren Shearer
Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
