Born on October 31, 1951, in Kent, England, MacCulloch went on to graduate with a BA, MA, and PhD from Churchill College, Cambridge. He tutored at Wesley College, Bristol and became ordained as a deacon in the Church of England, after which he ministered in Clifton for a year. MacCulloch eventually turned down the ordination to the priesthood because of political reasons regarding his gender preferences. A former member of the Gay Christian Movement, MacCulloch currently holds the position of Professor of History of the Church and is a Doctor of Divinity at the University of Oxford. He is also a Fellow of St. Cross College, Oxford and an award-winning historical author.
