Kitten has never seen a full moon before. She thinks it looks like a bowl of milk, and she reaches out her tongue to lick it. But no matter what she does she can't seem to reach it. In fact, each attempt just gets her into more and more trouble. Will the hungry kitten ever get her bowl of milk?

This is one of those simple repetitive bedtime stories. The story is cute, but it's the bold black and white pencil and gouache drawings that won Henkes the Caldecott medal. His lively, cartoonish style is full of expression, making this book as enjoyable for the pictures as it is for the words. Though the story is a bit formulaic, young children will certainly be amused by Kitten's futile quest for the moon and the many mishaps she encounters along the way.

Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
