Being Rabbit's friend comes with certain... risks. His grand ideas to help his friend Mouse always seem to lead them into even more trouble. When Rabbit gets Mouse's new airplane stuck in a tree he comes up with a scheme to get it out. Mouse knows it will surely go wrong, but Rabbit means well, and Mouse is loyal to his best friend.

The bold relief prints, the sunny watercolors, and the cute animals contribute to the overall cheerfulness of this 2003 Caldecott medalist, yet it's the story (told primarily through the pictures) that resonates. This is, first and foremost, a tale of loyalty. Rabbit is enthusiastic but a bit thoughtless. However, he's shown moving elephants (and other heavy animals) to help his friend. He gifts his friend with the airplane in the opening page of the book. And he always has another idea to help Mouse out of trouble. His unconditional loyalty is returned by his friend Mouse who sticks with him even as things go wrong time and again. A sweet picture of selfless friendship, told through expressive and inventive illustrations.

Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
