This story is the second of a trilogy dealing with Poland, Russia, Sweden, and the Ukraine in the period 1647-1674 and follows With Fire and Sword.
Volume 1 deals with the invasion of Poland as a whole by the Swedes, arising out of the claims of Charles Augustus, the Swedish king, to the Crown of Poland and particularly shows the utter collapse of the Poles.
Volume 2 shows how the Poles repulsed and drove out the invading Swedes after tremendous fighting.
