A native of Indiana, Rowland decided on teaching before realizing she'd rather be a poet. Spending time in New York City, Rowland worked for eight years as the editor for
MS magazine. From this experience she moved into writing books for children, gleaning ideas from her surroundings and her children. Rowland traveled to schools, speaking to students and encouraging them to read and write. She currently resides in New Jersey.
