Deborah Heiligman

Deborah Heiligman
Deborah Heiligman, a children's author and writer of books on various holidays, was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She grew up in a Jewish family, which has provided her with much subject matter for writing. Even as a young child, Heiligman had a strong interest in writing. She worked on school papers, had a penchant for her English classes, and although she took a bachelor's in Religious Studies from Brown University, she always desired to be a writer. Heiligman pursued writing for magazines after college, and it was then that she stumbled upon Scholastic News Explorer, a magazine geared toward fourth grade. Since then, she has happily inscribed numerous books for children, including On the Move and From Caterpillar to Butterfly. Many of Heiligman's works have received wide approval from critics, especially those that are scientific in genre. She also has a collection of books describing Jewish holidays. When Heiligman married her husband, Jonathan Weiner, she remained at home to raise her two sons, and she continues to write from her residence in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
