Dave Marks

After graduating from Western Michigan University, Marks went to Central Michigan University to earn his master's degree.  He also spent time on graduate studies in English at Eastern Michigan University and at Michigan State University.  For about 30 years Marks served in the classrooms, teaching writing courses for all ages levels, but it was through working with his son at home that Marks fomented a plan to improve students' writing skills and abilities.  With his wife Lea, Marks produced writing exercises that prepared their son for college-level English at a very young age.  Seeing that their ideas worked, the Marks began encouraging other parents to look at their writing program in 1989.  By 1992 they started providing workshops, and now their books called Writing Strands and Reading Strands are used by students all over the United States and in many foreign countries.  Marks founded the National Writing Institute, and these days he writes a column for Family Times and for Practical Homeschooling.
