Each of these books by Clara Pierson contain short chapters, telling of a creature found in itsnatural environment, and describing its characteristics and behaviors through a story (think personified animals). They all contain the basic story elements (characters, setting, problem, solving of problem and moral) and there is always some kind of lesson to be taken away from the story.
Excellent for Charlotte Mason-style education, these make a nice bridge from shorter Aesop's Fables to longer stories. They are short enough for a young student to narrate as a whole, and since they're not too long, it's fairly easy to read one of them per day. They can also be used to incorporate Science/Nature Study, as a child can use the stories as a starting point for further research on the animal (or observing it him/herself outside), draw pictures of the animals in a nature journal, etc.
