A Wonderful Story of Repentance and Salvation
Amanda Evans of Oregon City, 10/17/2008
Though it is such a great, well-beloved classic, I had never read A Christmas Carol before this Christmas. It?s unfortunate that I missed out on such a treasure for so many years! When Dickens describes the Ghosts of Christmases Past and Present, the joy of the season comes alive and makes me want to put on a frilly dress and go dance on a polished hardwood floor with holly decking the rafters. And on every page there is evidence that the English sense of humor was alive and well back in Dickens?s day. A Christmas Carol is a wonderful story of repentance and salvation, underlining the importance of sacrificial service in community. Scrooge learned that giving away one?s time, money, and self makes living much more joyful. But, moralistic and cheesy as that sounds, the story avoids falling into the cliché, or, if it does, it is only because the clichés originated within its pages.
