Benjamin B. Warfield

Benjamin B. Warfield
Born on November 5, 1851, to a wealthy, prominent family near Lexington, Kentucky, Warfield later entered Princeton University to study mathematics and science.  After graduation he traveled to Europe and there determined to learn about theology.  Returning to the United States he attended Princeton Seminary to train as a Presbyterian minister.  He preached in Kentucky and Ohio before marrying his wife and traveling to Germany to further his studies.  In Germany his newlywed wife was struck by lightning and suffered paralysis that lasted her lifetime.  Warfield cared for her until her death in 1915 while he also preached and studied to become a well-respected theologian.

After teaching at what is now called Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Warfield became ordained in 1879.  He took up various positions and began penning works about his conservative beliefs before he was appointed to be principal at Princeton Seminary from 1887-1921.  A man who believed in the authoritative view of the Bible, Warfield followed the Reformed confessional tradition and argued that God Himself authored the Bible and He used various men to write the words down.  Warfied penned books, articles, essays and gave sermons, and much of his work is still in print today.  He passed away on February 16, 1921.
