Oliver has ignored his father's will and withheld his brother Orlando's inheritance. He plans for Orlando to be killed in a wrestling match at court, where Duke Senior has been deposed and banished to the forest by his brother Duke Frederick. But Orlando wins the match, and also falls in love with Rosalind, Duke Senior's daughter. Duke Frederick banishes Orlando when he finds out that his father was one of his enemies, and also banishes Rosalind. Celia, Duke Frederick's daughter, promises to go with her. They decide to join Duke Senior in the Forest of Arden.

Disguised as brother and sister, Ganymede and Aliena, the women arrive at the forest, where they find Orlando, who is also hiding there, and Duke Senior and his party. Oliver comes to kill Orlando, but repents when Orlando saves him from a lion. He falls in love with "Aliena," or Celia, and wedding plans are made for the next day. "Ganymede" promises Orlando that he will be able to marry Rosalind at the same time. Rosalind also helps a shepherd, Corin, to win over his beloved Phoebe.

During celebrations, news arrives that Duke Frederick has repented and returned the dukedom to Duke Senior.
