Outside the castle wall stands a mountain of new footwear, hurled aside by the king in his frustrating search for a comfortable pair of shoes. Each day he samples the creations of a long line of shoemakers and each day the mountain of shoes grows higher.
Feeling irritable, His Majesty finally turns to hiring fools, one each month, to help him forget his aching feet. Being king means, of course, that one is wise to the ways of fools and not easily amused. But the April Fool, wise to the ways of magic (and of kings), proves irresistible.
Alice Schertle's lively tale of turn-about and deception, matched by Emily Arnold McCully's cheerful, energetic pictures, is an April Fool romp to be savored year round.
