Grossman grew up in a musical family. Over the years, she translated opera into English for production and worked as the associate producer at NBC Opera Theater. Grossman also wrote and edited memoirs, and she archived papers. With her daughter, Grossman wrote the cookbook Lobscouse and Spotted Dog: Which It's a Gastronomic Companion to the Aubrey/Maturin Novels. The authors researched the food that the ship's main characters would've eaten and drank, and they recreated it in their kitchen. In 2002 Grossman passed away from lung cancer at age 72.
