Born into a wealthy and prominent family, Charlotte Maria Tucker entered the world near Barnet, Middlesex, England on May 8, 1821. Her father served as a former director of the British East India Company, and her mother was close kin to James Boswell, Dr. Samuel Johnson's biographer. Educated at home, Tucker penned numerous plays and verses, yet her father disapproved of her publishing any of them. However, after his death in 1851, she wrote one or two books each year, donating the proceeds to charity. She used the pen name A. L. O. E. (a Lady of England) for her work, totaling 142 books, which included missionary tracts and allegories for children such as Eight Pearls of Blessing.
Tucker began her missionary service at age 54 after taking care of her parents, nephews, and nieces for almost 18 years. Her studies of Hindustani helped tremendously and Tucker mastered the language within a year of her arriving in India. She helped at a boys' school, spread the Gospel, and aided women. Illness slowed her down in 1885, and Tucker passed away in Amritsar on December 2, 1893.
