Mom always wanted to find the best curriculum—one that was educational and entertaining at the same time—so we used a lot of different programs. For high school we settled on Mystery of History, Apologia Science, and Teaching Textbooks. We read a lot (like The Iliad and The Odyssey, Across Five Aprils, many of the Geoff & Janet Benge biographies, Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, and Know Why You Believe by Paul E. Little), though we didn't write many reports or answer a lot of questions because that would take the joy out of reading.
Sometimes we watched movies to supplement our history education. My favorites included Ivanhoe (the one with Jimmy Chisolm as Wamba), Spartacus starring Kirk Douglas, The Patriot, the 2004King Arthur, and tons and tons and tons of Shakespeare movies. Shakespeare is pretty cool—sometimes hard to understand, but pretty cool anyway.
Bible was my favorite subject. We'd read a couple chapters a day and discuss them. I still love reading the Bible, and studying it more in-depth was helpful and fun. Other subjects got boring, even watching the movies (some of them were really long), but Bible was never boring or pointless.
That's basically what my education was like. Some days were better than others. I'm still alive. School's out, forever.
