Sally stood on her tiptoes from pure happiness.
"Pierre's coming!" she thought. "Pierre's coming today! And Aunt Nannie says that we may have a kitchen dance to celebrate, and the sun is shining!"
"There's no harm in your expressing joy before me about seeing the young man, Sally," said her aunt. "But remember, pray, that it wouldn't be seemly in a young female to let any man guess that she felt the slightest interest in his coming. You are almost a young lady, Sally—in fact, many people would say that you are a young lady now—and you must learn to walk instead of running, and to speak more slowly, and not to laugh. Just smile, my dear."
"I'll try to remember, Aunt Nannie."
"And somehow you must keep your eyes from sparkling so. Come here, child, and give me a kiss, and then try to go about your work soberly."
Sally's feet remembered to walk halfway down the landing to the stairs and then they began to dance of their own will.
