Vera B. Williams

Vera B. Williams is the creator of many distinguished books and is the U.S. Illustrator Nominee for the 2004 Hans Christian Andersen Award. She lives in New York City.

"Throughout my childhood I was encouraged to make pictures, tell stories, act, and dance—all of this at a heaven in our New York City neighborhood called the Bronx House." As a youth, Vera took to painting, and age nine a painting of hers got fair acclaim, even admittance to the Museum of Modern Art. In 1949 she graduated from Black Mountain College in North Carolina, with a degree in graphic design. She also met and married Paul Williams, a fellow student.

Desiring for her art to continue to affect those in her local community she built and worked at a community center with other fellow artisans for the next 17 years. Her three children (Sarah, Jenny, Merce) grew up there. Years later, living in Vancouver, British Columbia, she began writing. She continues to write for a variety of audiences and ages.
