Ticket to Ride has become one of our favorite family games over the past year (maybe better than Settlers of Catan!). The rules are simple enough to be taught in a few minutes, even to younger kids, but it has enough tension and action to keep all the players involved through the whole game. Turns are very fast and a game usually runs about an hour to an hour and a half. The board and pieces are great quality and great looking, especially some of the more recent releases (Asia and Switzerland).
The United States version is the original and has the simplest rules. Ticket to Ride Europe introduces a few new rules, including ferries and tunnels. Europe, America and Germany (the Marklin Edition) are best for family play since they facilitate up to 5 players.
Nordic Countries is designed for 2-3 players.
The five map collections—Asia/Legendary Asia, Switzerland/India, Africa, Nederland, and UK/Pennsylvania—are expansions and require one of the other base games to play. They only contain the map board and new ticket cards, but no train cards or plastic train pieces.
