Rod and Staff's Third Grade English, is much like their other curriculum- good solid coverage of the subject, without the frills. This hardbacked pupil book is well suited to homeschool families as it can be re-used. The teaching of grammar and punctuation tends to be heavier in Rod and Staff English, and there is perhaps less writing than in other curriculum. Spelling is sold as a seperate subject, called Spelling by Sound and Structure. For the average student, there is more than enough practice in the student book, which is not a workbook. Many homeschool families do a lot of the lesson orally, and this is perfectly acceptable and indeed Rod and Staff lends itself well to this type of learning. Trying to do all the exercises, all the worksheets and tests may lead to burnout, but used judiciously this is a fantastic English curriculum at a wonderful price.
