Richard Scarry

Richard Scarry

Richard Scarry was born on June 5, 1919 in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents ran a shop there and enjoyed a comfortable life, even during the Great Depression. After graduating high school, Scarry enrolled in business college but dropped out because he didn't enjoy it. He then attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where he remained until he was drafted into the Army during World War II. After the war, Scarry worked for the art departments of several magazines before going to work for Little Golden Books in 1949.

Scarry's most famous series of books are about a place called Busytown, full of anthropomorphic animals. Over 100 million copies of his books have been sold, and they have been translated into dozens of languages.
