A young girl goes outside to play in the sun, but no matter how hard she tries, no one will play with her! She chases after a chipmunk, tries to pick up a turtle, and calls out to the blue jay, but they all run away. Disappointed, she sits down on a log and watches water bugs. But after she sits a while without moving, the chipmunk crawls back and sits on a log and the blue jay flies back to his perch on the tree. All the animals she tried to chase come back, and to top it all off, a baby fawn comes up and licks her cheek. This simple story, accompanied by delicate pencil drawings, captures the delight children find in small things, and also demonstrates the rewards of being patient.
