Dr. Phyllis Haddox has been a fixture in the educational world for over forty years. Her diverse resume includes occupations as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, author, and educational consultant; she currently presides at University of Oregon as Assistant Professor in the College of Education (Dept. of Special Education and Community Resources). An expert and insightful teacher, Dr. Haddox has offered her services in training other educators to use "Direct Instruction" methods, from the DISTAR programs (developed by Siegfried Engelmann). Her instruction and workshops, which encompass a vast range of topics such as remedial reading, English as a second language, reading comprehension, math, spelling, language, and behavioral management, have brought her both national and international acclaim. She has also worked directly with students of all grade levels, and has garnered respect for her skill with the children as well as her empathetic approach.
Dr. Haddox's involvement with the Direct Instruction programs extends to authorship; she is co-author (with Siegrfried Engelmann) of the successful and entertaining reading program, Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, as well as several others. In addition, she directed the Follow Through Project for University of Oregon's Direct Instruction Model, a colossal experiment that documented several educational styles in over one hundred communities. Resulting data revealed that students within the Direct Instruction Model excelled, with high levels in the various subjects, evidence of the program's ample adequacy. Phyllis Haddox's contributions to education, apparent in her wide range of teaching experience, training, and program development, have brought fresh learning techniques to students, allowing them to comprehend with clarity and ease.
