In 1928, at age 14, Paul Galdone emigrated from Budapest, Hungary to the United States. After studying at the Art Student League and the New York School of Industrial Design, Galdone took a job in the art department of a large publishing house. He discovered that the whole process of bookmaking fascinated him, and it became his career. Over the years, Galdone illustrated almost 300 books, some of which he wrote himself or adapted from fairy tales. A man gifted with drawing humorous, action-packed illustrations, Galdone received Caldecott Honors for his books Anatole and Anatole and the Cat. He passed away in 1986.
