Kevin Henkes, creator of the beloved mice Chrysanthemum, Lilly, and Wendell, was born in Racine, Wisconsin in 1960. He grew up with a strong interest in drawing and love of reading. At just nineteen years of age, Henkes' portfolio took the interest of Greenwillow Books publishing company in New York City, and saw his first work, All Alone, published in 1981. He loves to experiment, not just with his art but also with words, evident in his wide range of works. Henkes is the author of  Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, Weekend with Wendell, Kitten's First Full Moon, and novels such as Words of Stone and Protecting Marie. He is married with two children, and works from his own art studio.
