Karen Hesse

Karen Hesse

Karen Hesse, born in 1952, has won several honors for her works of children's literature. A native of Balitmore, Maryland, Hesse loved words as a child and had hopes of someday being an author. She studied both at Townson State College and University of Maryland, with degrees in Theater, English, Anthropology, and Psychology, covering a wide range of her interests. After finishing school, she and her husband Randy raised a family in Vermont, and while working at a colorful variety of jobs, Hesse wrote many books and poems from her experiences. Hesse's first novel, Wish on a Unicorn, was released in 1991 and followed by many more popular titles such as Letters from Rifka, Out of the Dust (1998 Newberry Medal winner), and Witness. Her works are praised for their historical vividness and beautiful, honest writing style. Hesse continues to live and write in her Vermont home with her husband and daughters.
