Joseph Papp

Joseph Papp

Papp was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 22, 1921. He grew up appreciating drama and the theater, becoming a theatrical producer and director. Founder of the New York Shakespeare Festival, Papp hoped to bring a greater audience to the playwright's works. Over time he drifted away from Shakespeare. Greatly respecting authors, he used many people's plays and made his Joseph Papp Public Theater a sensation with plays such as Hair and A Chorus Line. Papp later passed away on October 31, 1999.
