Joseph Krumgold

Krumgold was born on April 9, 1908, in Jersey City, New Jersey. His father operated movie theaters, and Krumgold's fascination with the industry led him to script movies for Hollywood. The movie Dream No More, he wrote, directed, and produced. Then, for the U. S. State Department, he made a film relating the story of a New Mexico sheepherding family, using two real life boys as the characters. The movie was remade for the general public, and Krumgold penned a fictional book using the film as his basis. ...And Now Miguel garnered such recognition that it won the Newbery Medal in 1954, and Krumgold later wrote Onion John, which won the prestigious award also. Krumgold was the first author to have received the Newbery Medal twice. Four women have since earned this distinction and share this honor. At age 72, Krumgold passed away in 1980.
