John B. Hattendorf

John B. Hattendorf
John Brewster Hattendorf is a maritime and navy historian with an extensive list of historical works to his credit. Hattendorf grew up in Western Springs, Illinois, where he was born on December 22, 1941. After graduating from Kenyon College in 1964, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. This led Hattendorf into government affairs, for which he worked at the Naval Historical Center and Naval War College. He continues to assist the government with his historical expertise both at the Naval War College and for the Navy's Advisory Subcommittee on Naval History. Outside of government work, Hattendorf is an active member of various maritime history-related societies, and has received numerous honors from both American and English institutions, including Oxford University and Royal Historical Society. Hattendorf also possesses degrees from Brown University and Oxford, and is often invited to speak at colleges worldwide. His written works cover the history of churches and navy officers along with naval warfare, and include Sea of Words and  America and the Sea: A Maritime History, as well as volumes for Oxford University Press.
