Husbands & Fathers

I recently overheard a conversation between two young Christian women bemoaning the fact that all the males they knew were "boys" and not "real men." Boys live for toys and for play. Boys delight in pleasure and shirk responsibility. Where are the true men? Where are the men who relish the task of being husbands and fathers? That question today is often answered with a sad shake of the head side to side.

Our culture has been telling males for the past 60 years that they must be more like women, be more sensitive, more in touch with their feelings, and certainly far less assertive and authoritative. But our culture has been wrong—so very wrong! Men today do not value and desire their roles as husbands and fathers because they do not know the fulfillment that awaits them in those roles. Men are made to serve women and children. When they're not permitted to do that they do the only other thing men are good at—being lazy sluggards. Are there too many couch potatoes? We need to tell men that they were made to be heroes.

Husbands and fathers are called to lay down their lives, just like Jesus did, for their wives and children. Frightening as that sounds, such husbandly and fatherly sacrifice is the only way to true masculine delight. Men are made to matter. Men are created to be heroic. Hard wired into the soul and body of every man is a longing to fight the dragon and rescue the damsel in distress. Trite as that might sound in our jaded culture, it is profoundly true. And only the biblical model of masculinity, of being husband and father, provides a daily opportunity to fight evil and rescue the weak.

Since our culture is so deeply deceived in its conception of masculinity, Christian men must look elsewhere for counsel and a role model. The books and audio we carry offer just that.
