Gobblet (named for the wooden cup-like markers used by players to gobble each others' pieces) is a purist's dream. Players use logic and memory to get four pieces in a row on the board. But if you think this is just an ultra-nerdy version of tic-tac-toe, you done thunk wrong.

Two players take turns moving one piece at a time. They can place a new token on the board, or put one of the hollow pieces over an existing piece—either their own, or one belonging to the other player. The winner is the first to get four pieces in a row.

It's that simple. But between getting your little wooden guys lined up, thwarting the enemy's efforts, and remembering how the pieces are stacked, Gobblet is never the same game. You might not be Mr. I-Use-Logic-To-Solve-Puzzles, but even Mr. I-Want-To-Play-A-Fun-Game can enjoy this one.

How to Play

C. Hollis Crossman used to be a child. Now he is a husband and father, teaches adult Sunday school in his Presbyterian congregation, and likes weird stuff. He might be a mythical creature, but he's definitely not a centaur. Read more of his reviews here.

  Not What It Seems
Carey Ann of Seattle, Washington, 11/10/2011
My husband purchased this game for our son in a specialty toy store last summer. At first glance this games looks really simple and because of that, I did not want to buy it. After seeing my husband and 7 year old play together I thought, why not try this out, it can't be that bad? Well, the first time I played I won. That was with the 7 year old. This game was easy, just like I thought. Then I played with the 10 year old, an expert at Catan. I met my match. He quite literally knocked me right off the board. He knew strategies that were not only impressive, he was efficient and he knew exactly how to take me down. I couldn't believe my eyes! It was at that point that I began to have a deeper respect for Gobblet, even if I did not like the name or the look of the game at first. I became infatuated with playing and eventually, winning. The ultimate challenge was to succeed in winning against my super smart, highly tactile and clever 10 year old son. Finally, after playing more times than I can remember, I won a game!

I highly recommend this game, buy it and be surprised by the simplicity and strategy, the sense of achievement when you win and happiness at knowing that board games really are fun to play with!
