In this novel depicting the Roaring Twenties, Nick Carraway comes home from WWI, moves East, and finds himself among the idle rich. As he surveys the reckless lives and relationships of high society, he is repeatedly drawn to one man who believes in and seems to embody the American Dream: Jay Gatsby. In the end, Nick finds that the god of materialism brings only moral emptiness and destruction.
