Old Woman Who Named Things

There once was an old woman who named things. She had outlived all her friends, and she thought by naming things that would never outlive her that she would never be lonely. And for a long time, she never was. She named her car Betsy. She named her house Franklin. Her chair was named Fred. But one day, a shy brown puppy came to her gate. The old woman was a kind old woman, so she fed the puppy and then told him to go home. The puppy seemed to like the old woman very much, and came back every day. But the old woman knows that if she names the puppy and keeps it, the puppy won’t last as long as Fred or Roxanne. She might even outlive the puppy. She kept feeding him, but she didn’t name him. But when the shy brown puppy didn’t come to the gate one day, the old woman realized that she loved the puppy very much. She drove to the dogcatcher’s, and found the shy brown puppy in the kennel. He came running to her. Thinking of how lucky she was to have had such good friends in the past and lucky she was now to have the brown puppy, the old woman named him Lucky, and they drove back to Franklin in Betsy. They were never lonely again.
