Historical Setting: Middle Ages, 350-1450 A.D.

This book is about Europe in the Middle Ages. It covers the whole of the period from the decline of the Roman Empire to the discovery of America in the 15th century, and provides the link between ancient and modern history. During the Middle Ages many kingdoms rose and fell, but the threads of civilization were never broken: it is a continuous story.

Part One tells that story chronologically, examining in turn each cultural flowering and contribution it made to European civilization as a whole.

Part Two looks at medieval Europe region by region and uses the evidence of surviving records—buildings, documents and works of art—to reconstruct a picture of what life was like for all sections of society. Maps, text and illustrations all work together to make that picture both clear and exciting.
