Cicely Mary Barker was born in 1895 and died in 1973. Because she was a frail child, she was educated at home and taught herself to paint in oil, watercolor and pastel. Her best known works are the Flower Fairies books, the first of which was published in Scotland in 1923. The series has now become a classic of children's literature.
