Bob Books

Bob Books are well-loved for their simple but funny phonics-based stories, and the equally funny black and white line drawings that accompany them. They're recommended for ages four and up, so as soon as children can sound out a few letters they can begin to read. Earlier books have only three letter words and are often written with no more than four total letters.

The beauty of these early readers is their ability to make phonics concrete, and to boost confidence in young readers. The stories are absurd but not incomprehensible. We know kids who are delighted when they're finally able to read their first Bob Book, and who go back and read their favorites even after they've moved to more complicated reading.

Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
