This workbook begins a formal study of phonics— starting with short vowel sounds and logically progressing through consonants, long vowels, and beyond. Drill, repetition, and writing activities are used to ensure comprehension.

The teacher’s manual provides the purpose and lesson (in addition to the answers) for each page of the workbook. It also indicates when each of the Kindergarten Readers should be introduced to the student.

The Flashcards and Charts include charts of various rules (i.e. "short vowel o words", "Short vowel words that end in ck"), while the cards themselves help to introduce the upper-case and lower-case letters of the alphabet as well as the sounds they make. Special information is also printed on the back of some of the cards to help students understand consonant blends.

Good Solid Phonics With No Frills

I'm not a teacher and found this an easy, good start to phonics. Although a lot of ground is covered, there is not much emphasis on diacritical markings, which I appreciate. A fair bit of writing for some children, although we'd then do it orally. The program follows a logical sequence and was easy to understand and implement. The book is two tone and pictures are line type drawings, no distracting graphics. Not of a lot of extra activity is added, just what you need. Great price. I would use this for each of my children because it is good value for money.

This phonics program is so inexpensive and easy to use. My son went from barely sounding out cvc words to reading whole books. This program is very writing intensive. Your student will be asked to write words a great deal. However if you gently plug through you will have a kindergartener able to write complete sentences with decent handwriting. In fact you do not need a handwriting program if you use this, but rather just a good pad of kindergarten paper and the wisdom to stop and practice when your child needs some review. I highly recommend the Kindergarten Phonics Readers from CLP to go with this, and also that you do everything in the TM, (which is painless and efficient.) Though the workbook is not "fun" it at least has variety in the program- some white board, some blending, some writing, etc. This is working for us! My son colors many of the pages so we have not missed color. I looked at and tried a few other things and they failed because they were either too time consuming, too slow, or terribly repetitive. This takes 20 minutes per day, moves at a challenging pace, and though predictable, is not repetitive.
