The Zulu cattlemen of South Africa were once a mighty people of the African continent. As Bantu tribesmen their ancestors settled long ago in what is now Natal, and the Zulu have lived their ever since.

In this sympathetic study, Dr. Sonia Bleeker presents the story of the Zulu, emphasizing the importance of cattle in their culture. She describes their family life, customs, and religious beliefs, taking material from the period toward the end of the nineteenth century, when Zulu culture was at its peak. Skillfully she interweaves legends that contain insights into Zulu ways. Stories about a Feast of Peace in a legendary age, the creation of musical instruments such as the marimba, and events occurring in the life of their great chief, Shaka, who ruled about the time of Napoleon, are of particular interest.

The final chapter sketches in the existence of the Zulu in modern times, under the policy of apartheid, with dignity and restraint. Illustrated with sensitive line drawings, this book gives readers the background to understand current issues and problems.
