The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent condition, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

A line of camels and riders, crossing the empty desert horizon, has always been a typical sight in the world of the Tuareg. Once in control of all the caravan routes in the Sahara, these men, wearing their indigo-blue veils, were feared as raiders and famous as camel-men and caravan guides. Unlike other Moslems, their women were much respected and enjoyed equality in the households with the men. In fact, among the Tuareg, descent is claimed through the mother, and children belong to her clan.

The history and customs of this ancient, stately people are here recounted by Sonia Bleeker in a book that will be a welcome addition to anthropology collections. Here we see the salt caravans come to life and hear the noise and haggling of the oases marketplaces. The peaceful existence in the desert camps, the gaiety of a Tendi party, with the haunting sound of the women's singing, and the tragic fate of the present-day Tuareg noblemen are all described vividly and with authority. The book's value is also enhanced by Kisa Sasaki's careful, lovely illustrations.
