When you go owling you don't need words or warm or anything but hope. That's what Pa says.

Her brothers have gone owling with Pa before. Now it's her turn. They say when you go owling, you must remember to be quiet and brave. Sometimes you won't see an owl. But sometimes you will. And that is when the long, cold trip pays off.

This is a quiet, gentle story of a girl and her father going owling one cold snowy night under the owl moon. Yolen has stated that the child is based on her daughter Heidi, and the father is her husband David who often took their three children owling.

Jane Yolen's prose is pleasant and poetic, and John Schoenherr's pen and ink illustrations are beautiful. He uses blank space to his advantage in each picture, sometimes placing the characters in the top or bottom corner of the page to emphasize the vast, quiet, snowy landscape through which they're walking. This atmospheric Caldecott medalist would make great bedtime reading for children.

Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
