Published in 1962 by Little, Brown, this story tells the story of Colin, a boy who is in a hospital recuperating from a bad car accident, in which his beloved dog saved his life, but died doing so. While there, grieving the loss of his dog, a "poddley" (a time-travelling, elf-like creature) visits him and whisks him away on an adventure to medieval Scotland, where he meets Robert the Bruce—who has a similar experience while Colin watches.
While the end is a happy one, this book deals with some big feelings!
